Contango

In contango, a futures-based ETF loses a little value each time it sells an expiring near-month contract and buys the next, pricier one — a structural cost that exists independent of whether the underlying commodity's spot price moves at all. It's the mechanism behind roll drag, and it's why a futures-based commodity ETF can underperform the spot price of the commodity it tracks over long periods.

This explains what contango measures. It isn't investment advice — see the disclaimer.
