Compounding

Compounding is what makes a savings balance grow faster over time even with no change in contribution size: each year's return applies to a larger base, since prior returns are now part of the balance too. Over long horizons this effect dominates the total — most of a multi-decade balance's growth typically comes from compounding, not from the contributions themselves.

This explains what compounding measures. It isn't investment advice — see the disclaimer.
